(via World Loanword Database) The World Loanword Database (WOLD), edited by Martin Haspelmath and Uri Tadmor, is a scientific publication by the Max Planck Digital Library, Munich (2009).
It provides vocabularies (mini-dictionaries of about 1000-2000 entries) of 41 languages from around the world, with comprehensive information about the loanword status of each word. It allows users to find loanwords, source words and donor languages in each of the 41 languages, but also makes it easy to compare loanwords across languages.
In this database, there is also a list of 1668 Hausa words (with tone and vowel length marked), together with their meanings and explanations about their status as possible loanwords from Arabic, English, Kanuri and a few other donor languages.

The World Soccer Championship goes on in South Africa. On the BBC Hausa website, there is a whole page on it in Hausa (Gasar cin kofin duniya 2010), including reports and pictures.

Today is “Earth Day“, a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. I have run into the website of the Earth Charter Initiative – Nigeria. According to what is written there,
The Earth Charter is a declaration of fundamental ethical principles for building a just, sustainable and peaceful global society in the 21st century. It seeks to inspire in all people a new sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility for the well-being of the whole human family, the greater community of life, and future generations. It is a vision of hope and a call to action.
I haven’t heard about this initiative before and I hope it isn’t linked to some dubious organisation. The reason I am sharing a link to it here on Hausa Online is because it also has a Hausa version: Yaryejeniya ta Duniya:

At WorldLingo.com I have found a free online translation tool that is (somewhat) able to translate from and to Hausa. Here is a screenshot:

Machine translation tools are usually very limited in what you can do with them, so don’t expect too much. But it may be fun to try out anyway.
FSI Hausa Basic Course Online

At fsi-language-courses.org one can find language courses developed by the US Foreign Service Institute. These courses were developed by the United States government and are in the public domain. The course materials are made freely available in an electronic format through the private efforts of individuals who are donating their time and resources to scan and OCR the old course books and digitize the accompanying tapes. Check out what is available for Hausa and other LCTLs.

The Hausa Home Video Resource Centre is an initiative of the Department of Mass Communication at Bayero University in Kano, Nigeria. It was founded with the aim to provide access to information about the Hausa film industry for researchers, journalists, and the general public and to provide useful resources for practitioners in the industry. It is currently being coordinated by Carmen McCain, a PhD candidate at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and a visiting scholar in the Department of Mass Communications at Bayero University. New blog: Karin magana

Today I have launched Karin magana, a collection of proverbs in Hausa. Just like Hausa Online, it is a weblog and will be updated whenever I have some time left. In some cases, I will add a translation or some information on how these proverbs are used, but in most case they will be presented “as is” without any further comments. However, readers are welcome to add their comments to the proverbs: possible uses, translations and any other interesting facts.
With time, I hope that Karin magana will become another Hausa online resource which both Hausa speakers and learners will find helpful. Have a look, tell me how you like it and what could be improved.
